Legal Facts |
Under certain circumstances, juvenile defendants (as defined by State law) can be considered adults and tried in criminal courts. A BJS study conducted in 40 of the Nation's largest urban counties found An estimated 7,100 juvenile defendants were charged with felonies in adult criminal court in 1998.
In 2000, 68% of all felons convicted in State courts were sentenced to a period of confinement - 40% to State prisons and 28% to local jails. Jail sentences are for short-term confinement (usually for a year or less) in a county or city facility, while prison sentences are for long-term confinement (usually for over a year) in a State facility.

Choosing a Lawyer |
Get full clarity on the fee structure:
Lawyers may charge you for every action they take while defending you or representing you in court. This could amount to hundreds of dollars an hour. While choosing your lawyer, keep in mind that you must discuss the fees in detail so that there are no hidden costs to be discovered later. The fee will greatly depend upon the nature of your case, and whether the lawyer is comfortable with it therefore the details must be ascertained before hand in black and white.
Understand the lawyers fee structure:
The legal fee could be divided into a fixed fee (usually for routine legal work), an hourly fee, a retainer fee (so that the lawyer is always available to handle your case) or a contingency fee (where you pay the lawyer a certain percentage of the money you receive as compensation). Speak to the lawyer in detail regarding the fee structure and what services are included in the fee. If there are any additional charges, these should be clarified beforehand.
