In 1908, Congress passed the Federal Employers' Liability Act, (FELA). This law assures railroad employees a safe work place and gives them and their families the right to recover compensation if injured in a railroad related accident. Under FELA, injured employees can seek compensation for wage loss, future wage loss, medical expenses and treatments, pain and suffering, and for partial or permanent disability. If an employee is killed on the job, survivors are entitled to recover damages for what they have suffered because of the death.

    Legal Facts
  • About three-fourths of felony defendants in 2000 were charged with a nonviolent felony. The most frequently charged nonviolent offenses were drug trafficking (17.2%), other drug offenses (19.6%), theft (8.2%), and burglary (7.3%).

  • Appellate courts implement various strategies to make the workload of appellate courts more efficient. Thirty seven States, by 1998, for example, had some expedited briefing procedures in their appellate court systems (table 26). Eighteen States had accelerated or special calendars in some courts for specific case types (table 27), and all but 12 States had some limitation on oral arguments in criminal and/or civil cases.

  • Choosing a Lawyer
  • Always make a comparison before choosing a lawyer:
Before you choose a lawyer always make a good comparison by asking colleagues, friends and people associated with the legal profession. You can get some important information, which you would not get by simply visiting the law firm in question. Another good comparison is by finding out what other lawyers and legal web sites think about the law firm. A good site to find out about the standing of lawyers is www.martindale.com

  • Always find out how much many similar cases the lawyer has taken up:
The legal profession is very vast. Lawyers take up cases of varying nature and may not have a good working knowledge of the nature of certain cases. You must speak to the lawyer and find out whether he/she has actually taken up cases of a similar/same nature. After all, what would a divorce lawyer know about personal injury cases. Make sure that the lawyer takes up at least 60% cases of a similar nature/ similar field of law.
